A new
theatre in Downtown Petersburg will bring with it financial, social, and
cultural benefits.
FINANCIAL BENEFITS
The most significant financial impact will be the influx of consumers
into the Old Town business district spending money on “evenings out.”
Sycamore Rouge will bring new consumers to the area, and introduce them
to the charm and diversity of Historic Petersburg. These audiences will
not only be spending money at the theatre. They will stop in at local
restaurants, antique stores and all the diverse shops of Old Towne. We
plan to draw audiences from the primary markets of Richmond, Norfolk,
Charlottesville, and our own tri-cities.
A professional venue located in the heart of Downtown Historic
Petersburg will provide business not only from our patrons, but also as
an entity in and of itself.
Sycamore
Rouge will be in need of the skills, talents and products of local
vendors including, but not exclusive to: lumber yards, cobblers,
printers, dry cleaners, wig makers, hair stylists, second hand clothing
shops, and other retail establishments that might provide services and
goods to the theatre.

Having a professional, not-for-profit theatre in the heart of Historic
Petersburg will also provide a cultural anchor for the city. Theatre has
the power to gather diverse and seemingly non-related groups of people
into a unified social organism with common goals and understandings.
People love to go to the theatre for an evening’s entertainment.
Sycamore Rouge will entertain audiences, as all theatre should—but it
will not stop there. Our theatre will also educate and enlighten by
examining social, personal and artistic issues relevant to our lives and
communities today. By presenting a diverse range of live performances
that are affordable, Sycamore Rouge hopes to attract an equally wide
range of people from all walks of life.
It is the mission of Sycamore Rouge, Incorporated to promote creativity,
to revitalize Old Towne Petersburg, and to strengthen, stimulate and
educate our community. Sycamore Rouge hopes to enrich the lives of
Petersburg children through outreach programs where we invite them to
explore theatre and all its possibilities. Through the arts children
increase their social skills, community awareness, artistic abilities
and cultural perspective.
